2013 Vision2020 Outreach Activities

Vision2020-Surigao del Sur is “a blindness prevention and sight restoration” program under a cross sector partnership led by Montero Medical Missions-EyeSight2020 (monteromedicalmissions. org) a faith based and inter-faith international NGO based in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA and the duly created Provincial Eyesight Board of Surigao del Sur, Philippines. It employs community resource mobilization and private-public partnership strategies to sustain hospital base operations, eye-care outreach activities and eyeglass banking operations. It runs with a close collaboration with the Department of Health of the Philippine government through the National Committee on Sight Preservation (NCSP) in line with International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) – VISION 2020 – The Right to Sight global initiative.

Inspired by Christian love and service to humanity and urged by the surgical backlog and increasing incidence of blindness and visual impairment in the Philippines, Vision2020-SDS, aims to provide free access to primary eye health services for indigents and affordable to low income patients in underserved communities.

Vision2020-SDS model eye clinic is located in Madrid District Hospital, Province of Surigao del Sur in the Philippines.

“Improving Peoples’ Lives By Restoring Their Vision To Enable Them Achieve Their Full Potential”

  • We will promote VISION 2020:The Right to Sight- global initiative, which aims to eliminate avoidable blindness by the year 2020 in the province of Surigao del Sur;
  • We will partner with government and non-government organizations to implement and sustain our sight restoration and sight saving program within Surigao del Sur province and eventually in the region.

In 2013, a total of 3,622 eye exams were performed while 3,566 corresponding eyeglasses prescriptions were filled and dispensed free and some for token fees. 432 patients were referred for cataract and other surgical interventions to restore their eyesight. In 2014, we were able to reach out for more villages of large municipalities of the southern district of the province (report soon to be available on MMM website).

With better appreciation on our efforts to achieving our vision and mission, the Provincial government of Surigao del Sur is seriously considering establishing an eye care center for the province while we have formally engaged into partnership with the local government unit (LGU) of the municipality of Carrascal, Surigao del Sur to make eye care part of their local healthcare system using Vision2020 model.

Vision2020-SDS services include:

  • Eye Exam & Refraction
  • Eyeglasses Dispensing
  • Surgical Referral System
  • Cataract Screening & Post Surgical Care
  • Ocular Injuries & Emergencies
